About Reading
Reading class meets every day during 1st period (8:30-9:12). We do many things from reading short stories to long novels. Throughout the year, students are expected to read 12 AR novels (six per semester). To accompany the novels, students take an AR test and complete a Literature Assessment.
Raymond's Run
The first story we read was entitled "Raymond's Run" by Toni Cade Bambara. Before reading the story, students write down their self-identity. I then shuffled them and as a class, we tried to guess whose identity belonged to whom. We then talked about the Needs Assessment and if the two matched.

The Lady or the Tiger
This story is about self-sacrifice and love. Students were given the opportunity at the completion of the story to write an ending according to what they believe to be the truth--the lady or the tiger. As a 'real world' connection, students were given hypothetical crimes and assigned their fate. This led to a discussion about our justice system.
